What a Destination Wedding in the Dominican Republic Really Costs

Most wedding websites refuse to answer this question directly. They say things like "it depends" and "every wedding is unique" and redirect you to a contact form. I understand why — pricing is complicated, it does depend, and every wedding really is different. But I also know that "it depends" is not helpful when you're sitting at your kitchen table trying to figure out whether a destination wedding in the Dominican Republic is even possible for your situation.

So here is what I actually tell couples when they ask me.

Start with total celebration budget, not wedding-day cost

The first number that matters isn't the wedding ceremony cost. It's the total celebration budget — everything from the first vendor deposit to the last breakfast the morning after. Couples who plan only for the wedding day often find themselves surprised by what surrounds it: welcome dinners, guest transportation, accommodation coordination, day-after brunches. These aren't optional extras. They're part of what makes a destination wedding feel like a destination wedding.

What the categories actually cost

Venue

The venue is often the largest single line item. Private villas run higher than resort buyouts, but offer more control. The range is wide — the right venue for you depends on your guest count, your vision, and your date. Villas often charge event fees, while resorts may require a minimum amount of guests to stay at the hotel for 1–3 nights.

Catering

Per-head costs in the Dominican Republic are lower than in North America or Europe, but "lower" is relative. A sit-down dinner for 40 guests with proper service, open bar, and a wedding cake is still a significant investment.

Photography and video

This is not the place to cut. A good vendor who knows destination weddings and Caribbean light costs accordingly — and is worth it. The photographs and video are what remains.

Florals

My own team at Bodas y Mas Flowers handles this for most of my couples. Florals are where budget can expand quickly if you let it — and where local, seasonal choices make a significant difference.

Music

A DJ plus live musician combination (a saxophonist, a violinist, or a percussionist for example) is one of the most effective upgrades on a mid-range wedding. It changes the energy of an entire reception.

Planning and coordination

This is the line item couples most often try to reduce. It's also the one that protects every other line item.

The costs nobody mentions upfront

These are the numbers that surprise couples who haven't planned a destination wedding before:

• International banking fees. Deposits from your home country to the Dominican Republic: vendors are typically paid by wire transfer or credit card payment. Each payment method has a cost, and there are usually several of them.
• Vendor travel and accommodation. If your photographer or other key vendors travel to your venue, that cost falls somewhere — either built into their quote, or added separately.
• Tips. The teams that set up your reception, serve your dinner, and break everything down at midnight are not tipped automatically. A meaningful tip for your vendors is part of a real wedding budget.
• The unexpected. Something always costs more than expected. I build a contingency into every budget I help plan. It's not pessimism — it's experience.

What does a starting investment look like?

For a well-planned destination wedding in Puerto Plata — ceremony, dinner, music, florals, photography, and planning — with 30 to 60 guests, I generally work with couples whose total celebration investment starts at around $40,000 USD.

Below that number, the compromises start to stack up in ways that affect the experience — for the couple, and for the guests. Above it, the possibilities expand significantly: more guests, better venues, longer multi-day formats, more elaborate florals and music.

I'm transparent about numbers because I think couples deserve to know what they're getting into before they've spent months falling in love with a venue they can't actually afford.
